Watching your temperature

Refrigerated truck driving is all about checking on your trailer. Since the contents inside are often perishable items like liquids, meat, pharmaceuticals, or paint, the trailer contents must remain at their required temperature throughout the trip to the customer. This adds another level of responsibility for drivers.

When we spoke to refrigerated driver Josh B., he said: “Refrigerated has a little bit more challenges on top of dry van because we do have to watch our temperatures, think about food safety and cleanliness more.”

Keeping cool

An article by DFreight breaks down the parts of the refrigerated trailer as follows: If you look closely at the front of the trailer, you will notice the Trailer Refrigeration Unit or TRU. The TRU is made up of three key components, the compressor, condenser, and the evaporator.

Its compressor runs on a small diesel engine. The liquid from the compressor enters the condenser which is then passed through the evaporator into the trailer. Drivers can adjust and maintain temperatures themselves using the TRUs control panel ranging from temperatures -40 to 80 degrees.
