Swift Experienced drivers share their stories

Every year, we sit down with several experienced drivers to learn their stories and hear their feedback. Whether it’s job security, financial independence, or flexibility, we are proud to know experienced drivers have come to Swift and made a permanent home here.

A number of experienced drivers begin driving OTR, or Over-the-Road, at the earlier stages of their career. Once there is more experience under their belt, they have the opportunity to join dedicated accounts for specific customers. Pay and types of routes depend on the customer, but many dedicated accounts are local or regional, keeping drivers on the same route in a specific area every time. This can be a perk for experienced drivers looking to stay closer to home or seeking a change of pace from OTR driving.

“I like driving dedicated routes,” said George, an experienced Swift driver of 3 years and now dedicated driver. “There are no surprises. I don’t have to keep track of different appointment times or worry about live unloads. Everything is consistent, including your paychecks.”

George isn’t the only driver that’s pleased with his career at Swift. Experienced driver of 27 years, Bill L. told us in an interview: "Swift has been the total package. They've always come through. They're always there. I really am glad that I went with Swift first and I stayed with Swift. I think I'll be here until I retire."

Not only has Bill contributed nearly 30 years of his experience to Swift, but he has also passed that experience on to the next generation of drivers through mentoring.

“I’ve been a mentor for 26 years,” Bill said. “I’ve had students from all over the country and all over the world. They come from all different backgrounds. They’ve definitely enriched my life.”
